This specimen was lot 23747 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Jose I gold 4000 Reis 1751, AU55 NGC. 'Iosephus Dominvs' type. First year of issue. Slightly clashed dies with good eye appeal for and AU coin. From The RLM Collection, Part II." The type was struck 1751-77 without mintmark. Later types exist dated 1778-1822. It is the largest of the "moedas provinciales" series and the only one that can be called somewhat common.
