Brazil 1748-B 6400 reis
This type was struck between 1732 and 1750 in Bahia and features the bust of João VI, king of Portugal 1706-50. While the 6400 réis is relatively available, its fractions (3200 réis, 1600 réis and 800 réis) are much scarcer. This type was also struck in Rio de Janeiro (KM 149) during this period, which issues are rather more common. This coin was called the "joe" in English speaking countries. Spanish colonial 4 escudos of this period were 13.54 g, 0.917 fine gold, .399 troy oz AGW and traded for nearly the same value. The first specimen was lot 480 in Ponterio sale 145. The second specimen was lot 21021 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 6400 Reis (Peca), 1748-B. Bahia Mint. Joao V. NGC Unc Details--Obverse Cleaned. Emanating from one of the final years in the reign of Joao V, this handsome specimen exhibits only the slightest degree of cleaning upon the obverse, otherwise remaining free from handling and sporting a bold strike with dazzling luster."
