This specimen was lot 23209 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 1600 Reis 1728-R, VF Details, damage at 2 o'clock near the rim. Rare issue of the Rio mint, the Escudo (or 1600 Reis) of the so-called 'Oval' Shield type. Only 4 dates struck of sim[I]lar rarity. From The RLM Collection." This type was struck at the Minas Gerais mint 1727-33 and at Bahia 1727-50 and at Rio 1727-36. This is the commonest of the three mints but is still rare.
