This specimen was lot 32395 in Heritage Sale 3115 (Chicago, May 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brazil: João V gold 1000 Reis (Quartinho) 1723-B AU Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Bahia mint, A hardy type, missing entirely from the RLM, Eliasberg, Norweb, and other advanced collections. Soundly struck, displaying even rub to the highpoints and a hint of caramel retone." This type was struck 1714-1726 in Bahia and 1707-27 at Rio as part of the "moeda provincial" series. While the 4000 réis is relatively available, its fractions (2000 réis and 1000 réis) are much scarcer. The weight of the 4000 réis was lowered from 10.75 g to 8.07 g in 1749; consequently, the earlier issues are quite scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.68 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM 104, LMDB-49.
