This specimen was lot 20100 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $1,938.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 4000 Reis 1718-B, UNC Details NGC, sea salvaged, meticulously sharp design details, surfaces very lightly dulled from salt water immersion. Quite attractive!" This type was struck 1714-27 at Rio and Bahia (shown here). Mintage of this denomination was suspended in 1727; when it resumed in 1749 it was at a lower weight of 8.07 g.
