This specimen was lot 476 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $2,300. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 4,000 Reis, 1717-B. João V (1706-1750). Sharply struck and very attractive. NGC Unc Details--Surface Hairlines." This type was struck 1714-27. The weight of the 4000 réis was lowered from 10.75 g to 8.07 g in 1749; consequently, the earlier issues are quite scarce.
