Brazil 1699 640 reis
The first specimen was lot 23157 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II 640 Reis 1699, horizontal reverse die rotation 90 degrees, very scarce variety. VF-XF Details, surfaces pitted from oxidation. From The Santana Collection of 640 Reis." The second specimen was lot 71359 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[2] noted, "BRAZIL. 640 Reis, 1699/8. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Peter II. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. Eye-catching and sharply detailed, this silver piece exhibits a very clear overdate. The surfaces have been thoroughly cleaned, but now display unique mottled toning enhanced by flashy luster that remains in the fields. A well-struck and interesting example. From the Pat Johnson Collection." The Lisbon mint struck this type in several varieties 1699-1700. Rotated reverses are rare in Brazilian coinage and garner large premiums.
