Sincona sale 38, lot 1151

This specimen was lot 1151 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 4,600 CHF (about US$5,517 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Brandenburg/Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm, 1640-1688 Dukat 1685. Berlin. Sehr selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Leicht gewellt. (Germany, electorate of Brandenburg, Frederick William, 1640-88, ducat of 1685, Berlin mint, Very rare, Very fine-extremely fine, Lightly wavy planchet.)"

This type is noted for 1679-86 but all dates are rare. Several other ducats are recorded for 1685, all rare. Ducats struck after 1700 are listed under Prussia.

Recorded mintage: unknown but few.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW; this specimen is 3.57 g.
