Sincona sale 38, lot 1152

This specimen was lot 1152 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 3,200 CHF (about US$3,838 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Brandenburg/Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm, 1640-1688 Halbdukat 1685. Königsberg. Münzmeister HS (Heinrich Sievert). Von grösster Seltenheit. Fast vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Brandenburg, Frederick William, 1640-88, half ducat of 1685, Königsberg mint. Of the highest rarity, About extremely fine.)"

This type is noted for 1670-71 and 1685. The SCWC does not award this type a particularly high value but this specimen realized double that. Ducats struck after 1700 are listed under Prussia.

Recorded mintage: 400.

Specification: 1.75 g, 0.986 fine gold, .055 troy oz AGW; this specimen is 1.72 g.
