Künker sale 406, lot 4126

This specimen was lot 4126 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,624 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, BRANDENBURG, MARKGRAFSCHAFT, Georg Wilhelm, 1619-1640. Doppelter Reichstaler 1631, LM, Cöln. RR Rand und Felder min. bearbeitet, sehr schön. (electorate of Brandenburg, George William, 1619-40, double thaler of 1631, Cölln mint. Very rare, edge and fields tooled, very fine.)"

similar to KM 142 except straight top to shield. Cöln, today spelled Cölln, was a suburb of Berlin but is now part of the historic core. Georg Wilhelm attempted to remain neutral during the Thirty Years War but was forced to flee to Königsberg, leaving his subjects to the mercy of pillaging armies. His grandson, Frederick I, would become king of Prussia.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 57.89 g.

Catalog reference: KM 142, Bahrf. 791 b; Dav-6142A.
