Künker sale 386, lot 6064

This specimen was lot 6064 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €19,000 (about US$24,552 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, BRANDENBURG, MARKGRAFSCHAFT, SEIT DEM 14. JAHRHUNDERT KURFÜRSTENTUM, Georg Wilhelm, 1619-1640. Goldgulden 1628, LM, Cöln. GEORG · W-ILH · D : G · MAR · BR · S · R · Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit der Rechten das Zepter schulternd, die Linke am Schwertgriff//Z8 ARCHIC · ET · E · PRV · I · C · M · P · 16 11feldiges Wappen mit Mittelschild, darüber Kurhut, zu den Seiten die geteilte Signatur L - M (Liborius Müller, Münzmeister in Berlin 1620-1642 und zusätzlich in Cöln seit 1628). GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Sehr schön +. (electorate of Brandenburg, George William, 1619-40, goldgulden of 1628, Coln mint. Obverse: armored bust right, holding a sword and a scepter; reverse: eleven-fold arms with escutcheon, electoral cap above dividing the mintmaster's initials. Extremely rare, choice very fine.)"

Georg Wilhelm spent most of his reign hiding out in Konigsberg, far from the Thirty Years War. His gold issues are few and rare. This type was accompanied by a thaler (Dav-6143), another goldgulden (KM 131) and a double goldgulden (KM 132.1). This is the last issue of this denomination from this state.
