Brandenburg-Ansbach 1543 thaler Dav-8967
This specimen was lot 1696 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €240 (about US$333 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, BRANDEBOURG-FRANCONIE, Georg d'Ansbach et Albrecht de Bayreuth (1536-1543), AR Taler (Guldengroschen), 1543, Schwabach. D/ B. cuir. des deux margraves f. à f., sous la date. R/ Croix ornée avec l'écusson de Brandebourg en coeur, cantonnée des écus de Silésie, Poméranie, Zollern et Nuremberg. Nettoyé. Petit coup sur la tranche. (Germany, marquisate of Brandenburg-Franconia, George of Ansbach and Albert of Bayreuth, 1536-43, silver thaler of 1543, Schwabach mint. Obverse: armored busts of the margraves face to face, the date below; reverse: ornate cross charged with the arms of Brandenburg, cantonned with the arms of Silesia, Pomerania, Hohenzollern and Nuremburg. Cleaned, minor edge nick, Very Fine.)"
The Margravate of Brandenburg-Ansbach was ruled by the senior branch of the Hohenzollerns until the time of Napoleon, who confiscated it and awarded it to Bavaria. This type is listed for 1538-45. It is actually a joint coinage of Brandenburg-Ansbach and -Bayreuth.
