Brandenburg-Ansbach 1541 thaler Dav-8967
The first specimen was lot 2378 in Sincona sale 19 (Zürich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 260 (about US$326 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Taler 1541. Schwabach. Gutes sehr schön. (good very fine.)" The second specimen was lot 2054 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 350 CHF (about US$418 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"Brandenburg-Franken, Markgrafschaft, Georg und Albrecht, 1527-1545 Taler 1541. Schwabach. Fast vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. (margraviate of Brandenburg-Franconia, George and Albrecht, 1527-45, thaler of 1541, Schwabach mint. About extremely fine, Attractive patina.)"
The Margravate of Brandenburg-Ansbach was ruled by the senior branch of the Hohenzollerns until the time of Napoleon, who confiscated it and awarded it to Bavaria. This type is listed for 1538-47 and is fairly common for a sixteenth century thaler. It is actually a joint issue of Brandenburg-Ansbach and -Bayreuth.
