This specimen was lot 23987 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $2,010. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brandenburg-Franconia. Georg and Albrecht II Taler 1539, MS63 NGC, sharply detailed with light toning and some tiny flan flaws. A singular example of this issue of the Franconian branch of the Hohenzollerns." We have filed this under Brandenburg-Ansbach, as it was made there, but this issue is actually a joint issue of the Ansbach and Bayreuth lines. The Margravate of Brandenburg-Ansbach was ruled by the senior branch of the Hohenzollerns until the margrave sold out to Prussia in 1791 and moved to England.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
