Brandenburg-Ansbach 1538 thaler Dav-8965
This specimen was lot 4064 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €550 (about US$757 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG IN FRANKEN, MARKGRAFSCHAFT Georg und Albrecht, 1527-1543 (mit Titel Georgs bis 1545). Taler 1538, Schwabach. Münzmeister Wolf Ulbeck. Ohne Linie zwischen Brustbildern und Jahreszahl. RR Schön-sehr schön/sehr schön. Exemplar der Sammlung Münzen und Medaillen aus adeligem Privatbesitz. (margraviate of Brandenburg, George and Albert, 1527-43 (in George's name until 1545), thaler of 1538, Schwabach mint, without line between the busts and the date. Very rare, fine to very fine.)"
KM MB31/Dav-8965 has the date below the busts, KM MB33/Dav-8967 (struck 1538-45 and much more common) has the date between the busts. This coin is also called a guldiner. The Margravate of Brandenburg-Ansbach was ruled by the senior branch of the Hohenzollerns until the margrave sold out to Prussia in 1791 and moved to England.
