Brabant 1601(a) 1/4 florin
This specimen was lot 773 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,339 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR quart de florin (5 sols), 1601, Bruxelles. D/ B. affrontés des archiducs sous une couronne. En dessous, V. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Extrêmement rare. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, silver quarter florin or five sols of 1601, Brussels mint. Obverse: facing busts of the archdukes under a crown, a "V" below; reverse: crowned arms, order chain around. Extremely rare, very fine.)"
This type was struck 1601 at Antwerp and Brussels (shown here). It was part of the coinage reform of Albert and Isabella which attempted to revive the devastated Spanish Netherlands. It must not have been popular as it is now very rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 4.27 g, 0.667 fine silver, this specimen 4,17 g.
