Stack's Bowers February 2022 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75415

This specimen was lot 75415 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPANISH NETHERLANDS. Brabant. Ecu, 1597. Antwerp Mint. Philip II. NGC EF-40. A well struck coin with relatively sharp central design detail on both sides, and light gray toning throughout. The planchet has a few natural flaws, including a small gap in the rim at 4 o'clock." Davenport mentions this type for 1585-92, 1595-98 from Antwerp and Maastricht. The hand below the king's bust on the obverse is the Antwerp mintmark.
