Jean Elsen sale 143, lot 927

This specimen was lot 927 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,567 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe II (1555-1598), AR écu Philippe, 1573, Maastricht. D/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne, entre deux briquets, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. Très rare Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1555-98, silver écu Philippe of 1573, Maastricht mint. Obverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross between the jewels of the Golden Fleece. Very rare, nice patina, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

Davenport records this type from Antwerp and Maastricht (shown here, with star mintmark) for 1572-85. It is a revival of a type originally struck 1557-66. This type represents a very early experiment with decimal coinage, over a century before Russia adopted her hundred kopeks = one ruble. The écu Philippe was issued in divisions of one half, one fifth, one tenth and one twentieth.
