Jean Elsen sale 127, lot 1732

This specimen was lot 1732 in Jean Elsen sale 127 (Brussels, December 2015), where it sold for €700 (about US$899 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, ZEELAND, De Staten in opstand, AR Bourgondische rijksdaalder van Brabant, 1568, Antwerpen. Met klop Zeeuws wapen. Vz/ Bourgondisch kruis. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild, omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Zeldzaam. Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, province of Zeeland, states' uprising, silver Burgundian rijksdaalder of Brabant of 1568, Antwerp mint, with Zeelander counterstamp. Obverse: Burgundian cross; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Scarce, very fine.)"

Brabant, along with several other Dutch provinces, issued daalders during the sixteenth century. This issue bears Philip II's name. It is known from Antwerp (shown here, struck 1567-70) and Maastricht. This specimen was counterstamped during the States Revolt for circulation in Zeeland.
