Jean Elsen sale 148, lot 556

This specimen was lot 556 in Jean Elsen sale 148 (Brussels, September 2021), where it sold for €220 (about US$312 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe le Beau (1482-1506), AR griffon, s.d. (3e émission, 1487-1488), Malines. Ponctuation par annelets. D/ (couronne) DENARI' SIMPLEX NOIAT' GRIFON' Griffon rampant à g., ten. un briquet et un fusil. R/ DEV PL-VS AMA- QVA AR-GENTV' Ecu d'Autriche-Bourgogne sur une longue croix pattée. Beau à Très Beau, Provient de notre vente 92, 9 juin 2007, 844. (duchy of Brabant, Philip the Fair, 1482-1506, undated silver griffin, third emission, Malines mint, punctuated by annulets. Obverse: griffin rampant to left, bearing a briquet and a fuse; reverse: arms of Austria-Burgundy over a long cross pattée. Fine - Very Fine.)"

In the late fifteenth century, the county of Flanders was the wealthiest region in northern Europe. The death of duke Charles the Rash, in 1477, allowed the county to pass to the Hapsburgs. This coin was issued by the Austrian prince Philip the Fair. His son, Charles V, would unite Austria and Spain.
