Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 541

This specimen was lot 541 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €17,000 (about US$22,530 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Jeanne et Wenceslas (1355-1383), AV florin d'or au saint Servais, mars 1377, Maastricht. D/ + WENCEL'| Z: IOHANA: DEI: GRA| BRAB'| DVC' Ecu écartelé de Brabant, Limbourg et Luxembourg dans un polylobe. R/ SCI| S'VA-CII| EPI Saint Servais assis de f. sous une arcade gothique surmontée d'un dôme et de tourelles, ten. une clef et la crosse épiscopale. A ses pieds, le dragon vaincu. Extrêmement rare. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Jeanne and Wenceslas, 1355-83, gold florin d'or of St. Servais, march 1377, Maastricht mint. Obverse: quartered arms of Brabant, Limburg and Luxembourg in a polylobe; reverse: St. Servais seated under a Gothic arcade surmounted by a dome and towers, holding a key and an episcopal cross. At his feet, a defeated dragon. Extremely rare, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

Jeanne (1322-1406) was duchess of Brabant from 1355. She married Wenceslas of Luxembourg in 1356 but the pair were ejected from Brabant by Louis II of Flanders. Wenceslas went off to fight his neighbors in Germany and Jeanne was eventually restored to Brabant. Louis' daughter Margaret married the duke of Burgundy. On Jeanne's death in 1406, the duchy passed to Margaret's son Antoine of Burgundy, uniting the provinces of Flanders and Brabant.
