Jean Elsen sale 137, lot 682

This specimen was lot 682 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it sold for €600 (about US$835 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Jeanne et Wenceslas (1355-1383), AV Pieter d'or, 1375-1381, Louvain. D/ B. de saint Pierre de f., au-dessus de l'écu écartelé de Bohême, Brabant, Luxembourg et Limbourg. R/ Croix fleuronnée, une rose en coeur. presque Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Jeanne and Wencelas, 1355-83, pieter d'or, 1375-81, Louvain mint. Obverse: bust of St. Peter facing, below the arms of Bohemia, Brabant, Luxembourg and Limburg; reverse: floriate cross, rose in the middle. About very fine.)"

Jeanne (1322-1406) was duchess of Brabant from 1355. She married Wenceslas of Luxembourg in 1356 but the pair were ejected from Brabant by Louis II of Flanders. Wenceslas went off to fight his neighbors in Germany and Jeanne was eventually restored to Brabant. Louis' daughter Margaret married the duke of Burgundy. On Jeanne's death in 1406, the duchy passed to Margaret's son Antoine of Burgundy, uniting the provinces of Flanders and Brabant.
