Bombay AH 1172/2 1/5 rupee KM-272
This specimen was lot 752 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOMBAY PRESIDENCY: Malabar Coast: AR 1/5 rupee, Munbai, AH1172 (retrograde), stylized obverse legend derived from Shah Jahan II, vertical number "5" in the obverse center, regnal year "2" on the reverse, lightly polished, XF, RRR. Unpublished date, though another example from the same dies was sold in Noonans auction 268, lot 357 (date misread as 1174). The type was introduced in the year AH1131 which would have been during the short reign of Shah Jahan II, with the stylized obverse continued for all examples with the horizontal or inverted number 5 in the obverse center." The catalog number cited by the auctioneers, KM 272, is listed for AH 1188/9. Another fifth rupee, KM 271, was struck years 1-13, 21-25 but without the "5" on the obverse.
