Bombay 1791 2 pice
This specimen was lot 75285 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Bombay Presidency. 2 Pice, 1791. Birmingham (Soho) Mint. PCGS PROOF-62 Brown. Rich mahogany surfaces show a bit of hazel coloration, particularly on the obverse. An alluring brilliance flashes off the fields when they catch the light at a direct angle, the result of excellent production standards at the Soho Mint for this issue. A delightful Proof that is fast waxing in popularity with Indian numismatists." This two pice was struck 1791 and 1794 and replaced a long series of locally produced hammered coinage. It was one of the Soho Mint's first coinage contracts. Restrikes were made in gold plated copper for this and the accompanying half, one and 1½ pice.
