Bolivia 1862-PTS FJ 8 soles
The first specimen was lot 71130 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 8 Soles, 1862-PTS FJ. Potosi Mint. NGC AU-58. A captivating example, featuring premium tone that is especially vibrant on the date side. While often somewhat crudely produced, some incompleteness within the central designs is worthy of notation." The second specimen was lot 73143 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[2] noted, "BOLIVIA. 8 Soles, 1862-PTS FJ. Potosi Mint. NGC AU-55. A decently struck Crown with remnants of bright, frosty luster remaining in the protected areas, and a small splash of almond toning on the reverse." This type was struck 1859-1863 at the Potosi mint. The denomination on the coin is written as '400 Gs' rather than '8 soles' as with earlier issues. Assayer FP and overdate 1862/1 are noted for the year. Bolivia converted to decimal coinage in 1864.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
