This specimen was lot 1637 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $94. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA: Republic, AR 8 soles, 1837. Assayer LM, reverse hairlines, light tone, EF to About Unc." This type was struck in substantial quantities 1827-40 after Bolivian independence. It was struck in Potosi right thru the disruption of the temporary merger with Peru 1836-39. It is common. This coin often comes poorly struck on bad planchets; this specimen is above average. Later eight soles were struck to the same weight standard until 1859, when the weight was lowered to 20 grams. Bolivia converted to decimal coinage in 1864.
