Bolivia 1827-PTS JM 4 soles
This specimen was lot 75188 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $915. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 4 Soles, 1827-PTS JM. Potosi Mint. PCGS EF-40. From the Richard August Collection." The regular production of this denomination, suspended in 1816 during the war for independence, did not resume until 1827-29 and used a uniformed bust. This example sold for nearly three times the catalog value. In the 1830's and 1840's, Bolivia issued an enormous quantity of four soles debased to .667 fine, all dated 1830 (KM 96a). These coins flooded South America and were denounced by Bolivia's neighbors, to no avail.
