Aureo sale 242, lot 258

This specimen was lot 258 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 170 € (about US$264 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Fernando VII (1808-1833). 1825. Potosí. JL. Medio real. Bella. Brillo original. Rara así. S/C-. (Ferdinand VII, 1808-33, half real of 1825, Potosí mint. Very handsome, lustrous, rare thus, about uncirculated)."

This is an example of a type struck 1814-25 at Potosi, Bolivia (then called Upper Peru). It superseded the bust of Carlos IV. Assayer JL is recorded for 1823 and 1825 only. Assayer PJ is also listed for 1825 but is noted as rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.896 fine silver, .048 troy oz ASW.
