Stack's Bowers October 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 73549

This specimen was lot 73549 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 1/2 Real, 1784. Potosi Mint. Charles III. PCGS VF-25." This is an example of a type struck 1773-89 at Potosi, Bolivia (then called Upper Peru). It was replaced in 1791 by the bust of Charles IV. Harris[2] notes that Potosi half reales of Charles III are second to Mexico City as the commonest mint. Assayer PR is recorded for 1776-95.
