Aureo sale 238, lot 437

This specimen was lot 437 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 60 euro (about US$95 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1778. Potosí. PR. 8 reales. Rayitas y oxidaciones. (MBC-/BC+). (eight reales of 1778, Potosí mint. Scratches, corrosion, fine to very fine.)"

The year 1773 marked the initiation of bust coinage at Potosi, the last mint to do so, as cobs continued to be produced until 1773. The assayer PR appears for 1776-95.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
