Bohemia 1723-IFW 1/2 thaler

from Stack's Bowers 2017 NYINC sale, lot 6084

This specimen was lot 6084 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $199.75. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BOHEMIA. 1/2 Taler, 1723-IFW. Kuttenberg Mint. Charles VI (1711-40). NGC VF-30. Even wear consistent with grade. Old cabinet toning throughout with some muted blue hues in protected areas of detail in bust and arms." The oval shape derives from the use of roller dies, which were gradually superseded by the screw press in the eighteenth century. This type was struck 1717-26 and is common. IFW stood for mintmaster Johann Franz Weyer.
