Bohemia 1590 2 thaler Dav-8104
This specimen was lot 4628 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €10,000 (about US$13,086 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH. Rudolf II. 1576-1612. Doppelter Reichstaler 1590, Joachimstal. Doppelter Dreikaisertaler. Münzmeister Paul Hofmann. + MAXI · CARO · E · FERD · D · G · RO · C · ÆS · REG · HISP · 90 Die gekrönten und geharnischten Brustbilder der Kaiser Maximilian I. Karl V. und Ferdinand I. nebeneinander l.// f HVNG ° BO ° DAL ° GRO ° & ° ARCHID ° AVST ° D ° BVR Doppeladler mit dem kastilisch-österreichischen Wappen auf der Brust. RR Attraktives, sehr schönes Exemplar. (Holy Roman Empire, Rudolf II, 1576-1612, double "three emperors" thaler of 1590, Joachimsthal mint. Obverse: three crowned and armored busts left; reverse: double-headed eagle supports the arms of Castile and Austria on its breast. Attractive, very fine example.)
Halacka legt diesen Taler in seinem Nachtrag unter der Nr. 387 a nach Joachimstal und gibt als Münzmeister Paul Hofmann an. Es könnte eventuell aber auch Prag als Münzstätte in Frage kommen. Die Dreikaiserprägungen zählen zu den begehrtesten Münzen des Römisch-Deutschen Reiches. (Halacka places this thaler with the Joachimsthal mint with a possibility of Prague. The "three emperors" thaler is one of the most popular in the imperial series.)"
This design, whatever the mint, was also used for a quadruple thaler, triple thaler and single thaler of 1590.
