Bohemia (1578-84)-CS groschen
This specimen was lot 1692 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"SAINT EMPIRE, Rodolphe II (1576-1612), AR Weissgroschen, s.d. (1578-1584), Budweis. D/ Lion de Bohême. En dessous, différent du maitre: CS R/ Aigle impériale couronnée. Très rare. (Holy Roman Empire, Rudolf II, 1576-1612, undated silver weissgroschen, circa 1578-84, Budweis mint. Obverse: Bohemian lion, mintmaster's initials below; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. about Very Fine.)"
Weissgroschen were struck at Joachimsthal (moon and star mintmark, KM MB254, struck 1578-95), Kuttenberg (wing mintmark, KM MB233) and Budweis (shown here with the initials of mintmaster Christoph Schönfeld). It is heavier and probably better silver than the contemporary maley groschen.
