Central India in 1907, with Bhopal near the red "5"

This specimen was lot 33215 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Bhopal. Nazarena 1-1/2 Rupees, AH 1286 Year 2 (ca. 1869-70). Shah Jahan Begam (under Victoria as Empress). NGC AU-53. A rather RARE and seldom encountered issue, this specimen presents only a light degree of wear, with some deep and enticing toning in the recesses." Bhopal became a British princely state in 1818. The nawab of Bhopal--who happened to be female, a rarity in India--also struck a regular "dump" rupee (smaller and thicker, KM YD14) and a double rupee (KM C14) dated this year.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 16.44 g, silver, this specimen 16.31 g.

Catalog reference: KM-YB14.
