Steve Album sale 55, lot 2480

This specimen was lot 2480 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $110. The catalog description[1] noted, "BHARATPUR: Randir Singh, 1805-1823, AR broad rupee, Kumber, year 15, in the name of Muhammad Akbar II; mint inscribed as maha indrapur but actual mint identified as Kumber by the star left of the regnal year on the reverse, choice XF, R." The Bharatpur state, associated with the Marathas, was large enough to control several mints, including Akbarabad, Braj Indrapur, Kumber (shown here) and Mahe Indrapur. The rajas fended off British control until 1826, when a succession dispute allowed the British to come in and banish all the contenders except for a seven year old boy. The rajah sided with the British during the Indian Mutiny of 1857 and received enhanced recognition. This type was struck intermittently AH 1222-1233, 1238-1249, 1260-1262 with a thick flan (KM 116, 20-21 mm diameter) and AH 1234-1236 with a thin flan (KM 116a, shown here). The "۱۵" regnal date is visible on the reverse and a partial "۱۲۳۵" about 3 o'clock on the obverse.
