Steve Album sale 55, lot 2479

This specimen was lot 2479 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "BHARATPUR: Randhir Singh, 1805-1823, AR broad rupee, Braj Indrapur, AH1235 year 15, in the name of Muhammad Akbar II, gorgeous strike! AU. In AH1235, Braj Indrapur struck the standard rupee (about 22 mm), the special thin rupee (about 27 mm), and the very rare nazarana rupee (about 30 mm)." The Bharatpur state, associated with the Marathas, was large enough to control several mints, including Akbarabad, Braj Indrapur (shown here), Kumber and Mahe Indrapur. The rajas fended off British control until 1826, when a succession dispute allowed the British to come in and banish all the contenders except for a seven year old boy. The rajah sided with the British during the Indian Mutiny of 1857 and received enhanced recognition. This type was struck intermittently AH 1221-1271 with a thick flan (KM 106, 20-21 mm diameter) and AH 1213, 1234-1238 with a thin flan (KM 106a, shown here). The "۱۵" regnal date is visible on the reverse and a full "۱۲۳۵" about 3 o'clock on the obverse.
