Sincona sale 102, lot 5110

This specimen was lot 5110 in Sincona Auction 102 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$490 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, 20 Kreuzer 1758, Bern. Gekröntes Wappen in einem Blätterkranz. Rv. Vier doppelte gekrönte "B" ins Kreuz gestellt. In der Mitte das strahlende Gottesauge. Fast FDC. (Switzerland, city and canton of Bern, twnty kreuzer of 1758, Bern mint. Obverse: crowned arms within palm fronds; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned "B's", a glory at the center. About Mint State.)"

This type was struck 1758-59, 1764, 1776-77 and 1787 and the 1758 seems to be the most common date. A similar ten kreuzer (KM 120) exists. In Germany, the convention thaler was 120 kreuzer; in Switzerland, the thaler was 160 kreuzer, making this coin five batzen or 1/8 thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.40 g, silver, 25 mm diameter, this specimen 4.43 g.

Catalog reference: KM 119, D.T. 516a, HMZ 2-221f.
