Sincona sale 68, lot 5175

This specimen was lot 5175 in Sincona sale 68 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$494 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Bern | Stadt und Kanton, Vierer 1732, Bern. Silberabschlag. Geschweiftes Wappen. Rv. Blattkreuz in Kartusche. Oben die Jahreszahl. Selten. Vorzüglich. (city and canton of Bern, half kreuzer of 1732, Bern mint, struck in silver. Rare, Extremely fine.)"

The canton struck vierers 1731-32 in three varieties (KM 75, 98 and 99). As none are photographed in the SCWC, we don't know which one this is. This example realized triple the catalog value but is struck in silver, not billon.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: billon; this specimen 0.58 g.

Catalog reference: KM 75 or 98 or 99, D.T. 532, Anm. Richter (Proben) 1-193, HMZ 2-226g, Anm.
