Bern 1731 1/2 kreuzer
The first specimen was lot 3143 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 2,600 CHF (about US$3,436 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, Vierer 1731, Bern. Goldabschlag. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. Gewellt. Exemplar der Sammlung "Engel". (Switzerland, canton of Bern, vierer of 1731, Bern mint, struck in gold. Very rare, Extremely fine, Wavy flan.)"
The second specimen was lot 3144 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$330 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, Vierer 1731, Bern. Silberabschlag. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich-FDC. Kratzer auf Revers. (Switzerland, canton of Bern, vierer of 1731, Bern mint, struck in silver. Very rare, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Scratches on reverse.)"
This type was struck in billon 1731-32. The gold and silver strikes shown here were not intended for circulation. Another vierer struck in 1731 (KM 75) featured the cross in a circle instead of a cartouche.
