Bern 1590 goldgulden Fr-109
This specimen was lot 4074 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 28,000 CHF (about US$33,987 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | Bern | Stadt und Kanton. Goldgulden 1590, Bern. Nach links blickender Adler über dem Berner Wappen. Umschrift MONETA BERNENSIS 1590. Rv. Lilienkreuz in Vierpass mit dem Reichsapfel in der Mitte. Umschrift FRIDERI.LIBERT.AVTHOR+. Von grösster Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Switzerland, canton of Bern, goldgulden of 1590, Bern mint. Obverse: left-facing eagle over the cantonal arms, legend around; reverse: floriate cross in quadrilobe, imperial orb in the center, legend around. Of the highest rarity, Very fine-extremely fine.)"
Friedberg lists this very rare type for 1534, 1590 and 1594. The goldgulden, originally the same standard as the ducat, gradually slipped in weight and fineness.
