This specimen was lot 2421 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Berg. Taler, 1806-TS. Toned. Nice strike. EXTREMELY FINE." This rare one year type was made for Joachim Murat, one of Napoleon's marshals and duke of Berg before being transferred to Naples. The Duchy of Berg was a part of the Palatinate, given to the king of Bavaria 1799-1806 and annexed outright to France in 1808. After Waterloo, the province fell to Prussia.
