Künker sale 294, lot 3665

This specimen was lot 3665 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,313 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"JÜLICH-KLEVE-BERG, BERG, GRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1380 HERZOGTUM, Johann I. 1448-1481. Goldgulden o. J. Wesel. GOLD. RR Attraktives, sehr schönes Exemplar. (Germany, duchy of Julich-Cleve-Berg, John I, 1448-81, undated goldgulden, Wesel mint. Rare, very fine example.)"

This is the only goldgulden of this ruler (there is also Fr-1367, a half goldgulden). The weight suggested that this specimen was clipped but we don't see evidence of that in the photo. William II was count of Berg 1360-80 and duke of Berg 1380-1408, while another William II was duke of Julich 1361-93. Rainald IV was duke of Guelders (Gelderland) 1402-23. The merger of Berg, Cleve and Julich occurred later in the sixteenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.50 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 2.98 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-1368; Noss 152 a.
