Bentheim-Bentheim 1659-LK thaler Dav-6104
This specimen was lot 4969 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €36,000 (about US$46,519 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BENTHEIM-STEINFURT, GRAFSCHAFT, Ernst Wilhelm, 1643-1693. Reichstaler 1659, Münster. * ERN · WIL · BEN · TE · ST · E · LI · CO · RH · WE · HO · AL · E · H · D · P · H · COL Vierfach behelmtes und verziertes Wappen, unten r. die ligierte Signatur EK (Engelbert Kettler, Münzmeister in Münster 1636-1661)//· MONETA · NOVA · COMITA · BENTHEIMENSIS · Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Kopfscheinen, auf der Brust das Bentheimer Wappen, oben Krone mit der geteilten Jahreszahl 16 - 59. . Von größter Seltenheit. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung "Cygnus in Nummis". (county of Bentheim-Steinfurt, Ernest William, 1643-93, thaler of 1659, Munster mint. Obverse: four-helmeted and quartered arms, mintmaster's initials below; reverse: crowned double-headed eagle with halo, Bentheim arms on its breast, date above.)"
This tiny county was surrounded by the bishopric of Munster. This very rare issue is listed for 1659-60. The dynasty originally ruled all three counties (Bentheim, Tecklenburg and Rheda) but Tecklenburg was lost in 1696. The county was mediatized in 1806.
