Belize was formerly known as British Honduras. Great Britain expressed willingness to grant independence prior to 1981 but the English-speaking locals were nervous about occasional threats from Guatemala to invade and annex the territory. This specimen is one of a type struck for Belize by the Franklin mint 1975-76.
Recorded mintage: 118,000 plus 8,794 proofs.
