Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74177

This specimen was lot 74177 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "BELGIUM. 2 Centimes, 1864. Brussels Mint. Leopold I. NGC MS-65 Brown. An exceptional Gem, featuring mostly chocolate brown surfaces and some hints of red scattered elegantly throughout." This type was struck 1833-65 in large quantities but most dates before 1845 are scarce in nice condition. The SCWC notes an 1864/1 overdate and awards it a premium. This example realized six times the catalog value.
