This specimen was lot 963 in Jean Elsen price list 259 (Brussels, January-March 2012), where it was offered at € 3.000. The catalog noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, BAVIERE, Maximilien IV Joseph (1799-1805), AV ducat, 1801, Munich. Droit : Tête nue à droite, les cheveux noués par un ruban. Lég.: D·G·MAX·IOS· Revers : Ecu couronné, entre un rameau et une palme. Très Rare. Superbe à Fleur de Coin (Germany, Bavaria, Maximilien IV Joseph (1799-1805), gold ducat of 1801, Munich mint. Obverse: bare head to right with hair tied in a ribbon; 'D·G·MAX·IOS·' in legend. Reverse: crowned arms, palm fronds around. Very rare, EF - Unc.)"

This rare type, issued 1801-03, comes in two varieties, varying in the spelling of the elector's name. In 1805 he was promoted to king by Napoleon.
