Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 52051

This specimen was lot 52051 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Bavaria. Ducat, 1800. Maximilian IV Joseph. NGC MS-61. This beautiful Mint State Ducat delivers generous beauty, with rich mint luster and sparkling frostiness, with only the most modest signs of handling and friction." This rare type was struck 1799-1802. The obverse legend reads, "D • G • MAX • IOS • C • P • R • V • B • D • S • R • I • A • & • EL • D • I • C • & • M •". A similar ducat (KM 646.2), also struck 1799-1803, has the obverse legend "D • G • MAXIM • IOSEPH • C • P • R • V • B • D • S • R • I • A • & • EL •". In 1805, Maximilian IV Joseph was promoted to king by Napoleon.
