Sincona sale 6, lot 569

This specimen was lot 569 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Bayern, Herzogtum, 1623 Kurfürstentum, Karl Theodor, 1777-1799. Madonnentaler 1786. Geharnischtes Brustbild nach rechts. Rv. Madonna mit Kind in Strahlen auf Mondsichel und Wolken. Rv. just. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, Electorate of Bavaria, Charles Theodore, 1742-99, Madonna thaler of 1786. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: Madonna and Child on cloud, sunburst behind. Reverse adjustment marks, good very fine.)"

Charles Theodore became duke of Bavaria in 1777, uniting the two branches of the Wittelsbach dynasty. The Pfalz, or Palatinate, was occupied and annexed to France in 1799 and was not returned to Bavaria until the Congress of Vienna. The Electorate was abolished and Pfalz was merely another province of Bavaria, whose ruler was promoted to king. This type was struck at Munich 1778-94 and Arnberg 1778-79 and is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver; this specimen is 28,10 g.
