Batenburg 1577 daalder Dav-8571
This specimen was lot 41225 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $540. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Gelderland - Batenburg. Daalder, 1577. Herman Diederik. PCGS AU-50 Gold Shield. A nicely preserved example of the type with bold central design elements and clear legends, though a few areas of weakness and a planchet crack are noticed. The obverse displays mottled patina while the reverse is more of an even coloration. An example that is better than normally encountered with some remaining luster in the protected areas." The lords of Bronkhorst were barons of Batenburg in Gelderland and from there began issuing daalders in the 1550's. Two dozen types are noted in Davenport (not including minors) before minting ceased about 1579.
