Schulman 388-0047r.jpg

This specimen was lot 47 in Schulman auction 388 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,818 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Daalder van 30 stuiver, GELDERLAND Heerlijkheden en steden, 1565, Silver, WILLEM V van Bronckhorst 1556-1573, BATENBURG Klimmende leeuw DOMINE ❀ CONSERVA etc. Kz. gekroonde dubbele adelaar met borstschild DENA ❀ NOVVS ❀ D ❀ BATE ❀ TRIGINTA ❀ STV. Mmt. tinhaak. RRRR. Jaartal van de allerhoogste zeldzaamheid. Zeer fraai. (dollar of thirty stuivers of 1565, province of Gelderland, William V of Bronckhorst (1556–1573), Batenburg mint. Obverse: Rampant lion; legend: DOMINE ❀ CONSERVA, etc. Reverse: Crowned double-headed eagle supports the count's arms; legend: DENA ❀ NOVVS ❀ D ❀ BATE ❀ TRIGINTA ❀ STV. Mintmark: Tine hook. A date of the utmost rarity, Very Fine.)"

The lords of Bronkhorst were barons of Batenburg in Gelderland and from there began issuing daalders in the 1550's. Two dozen types are noted in Davenport (not including minors) before minting ceased about 1579. Numista notes three different daalders for 1565: Delm-541 ("DENA ✤ NO ✤ D ✤ BA ✤ TRIGINT ✤ ST ✤ 64"), Delm-542 ("DENA' ⋆ NOVVS ⋆ D ⋆ BATENB' ⋆ TRIQVINTA ⋆ STVE'", shown here) and Delm-543 ("MONETA ⋆ NOVA ⋆ ARGENTEA ⋆ BATENBORGEN"). They are likely the ancestor of the later leeuwendaalders of the republic.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28 g, silver, this specimen 27.20 g.
